what is sublimation?

🔬 1. In Science (Chemistry/Physics):

Sublimation is a phase transition where a substance changes directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid state.

  • Example: Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimates into CO₂ gas at room temperature.

  • Other Examples: Snow disappearing in cold weather without melting, iodine crystals, mothballs (naphthalene).

🎨 2. In Printing (Sublimation Printing):

Sublimation is a digital printing process that uses heat to transfer dye onto materials like:

🔧 How it works:

  1. A design is printed onto special sublimation paper using sublimation ink.

  2. Heat and pressure are applied (usually via a heat press).

  3. The ink turns into gas and bonds with the surface of the material.

  4. The result is a permanent, full-color image that won’t peel or fade easily.

🔁 Summary:

Context Meaning Example
Science Solid → Gas (no liquid phase) Dry ice sublimating
Printing Heat-based ink transfer into surfaces Custom printed mugs, shirts, tumblers
